Farina Criticizes Karol G Over "+57" Song: Claims Lack of Support for Other Female Artists

Monday, November 11, 2024 by James Rodriguez

A recent collaboration featuring some of Colombia's top music talents, such as Karol G, Feid, DFZM, Ovy On The Drums, J Balvin, Maluma, Ryan Castro, and Blessd, has sparked significant anticipation among fans. The track, titled "+57" — a nod to Colombia's country code — was initially promoted as a tribute to the nation's diverse urban music scene. However, following its release, both the song and its contributors have found themselves at the center of controversy, particularly after comments from singer Farina criticizing the lack of female representation.

In an interview on the show "En casa con Telemundo," Farina voiced her frustration about the absence of other women in the project besides Karol G. "That question should be addressed to Karol G. The song is hers. I believe there is a clear unwillingness to give exposure to any other female artist in Colombian urban music. That's my opinion. I'm not saying this about myself, but about other women in the genre," Farina stated, sparking a wave of controversy.

Voices of Discontent

The singer of "El Caballito" expressed that Karol G and the production team behind "+57" appear uninterested in promoting other female urban artists from Colombia. Farina highlighted that the country boasts talented female artists like Greeicy, Goyo, Nath, and Soley, who could have contributed to the song. This exclusion, according to Farina, reflects a broader lack of support for women in the urban music scene.

Social Media Reactions

Farina's remarks quickly generated discussion on social media, with many users echoing her sentiment that women in the music industry still face significant barriers to achieving the same visibility as their male counterparts. Conversely, some commentators suggested Farina might be relieved not to have been involved, as some reviews, including one from Rolling Stone, have criticized the lyrics of "+57" unfavorably.

Defending the Collaboration

Meanwhile, supporters of Karol G defended the artist lineup for "+57," arguing that "La Bichota" has consistently offered opportunities to emerging artists and that this collaboration was merely a gathering of close musical friends. They pointed out that Karol G has actively supported new Colombian talents throughout her career in various ways.
