Cuban Man Climbs and Walks on Roof of Passenger Bus in Havana

Monday, November 11, 2024 by Bella Nunez

A startling video has surfaced on social media showing a man walking precariously on the roof of a passenger bus in Havana, specifically on a bus from route 37. In the footage, dozens of people are heard shouting at the man to come down, while some bystanders simply opted to record the event. The man nervously paces back and forth, even touching electrical wires as he moves.

At one point, as a witness attempted to climb the bus to intervene, the man descended from the back of the vehicle and ran towards a police patrol that had arrived on the scene. In a surprising turn, he voluntarily entered through a window of the police car. The conclusion of the incident remains unclear, though it is presumed that the PNR officers took the individual into custody.

"Look at this, folks, to the very end, what is this, dude? What is this? Look how the 'kimiko' has the people [...] This man was walking and climbed onto the bus," wrote a witness on Facebook who shared a video of the incident. One of the viral videos circulating online does not capture many details of what transpired once the police arrived, leading to criticism of the person who filmed it.

The uproar was significant, with many questioning how the man managed to climb onto the bus, likely at a bus stop. Another post in the Facebook group Transportación Habana TH specified that the unusual event took place on bus 5229 of the mentioned route 37. According to the post, the "minor incident" occurred when a citizen, allegedly under the influence of drugs, climbed onto the bus. It was also mentioned that an investigation into the occurrence is underway.

Speculation and Public Reaction

While both posts suggested the man might have been under the influence of drugs, some believe he could actually be a citizen with mental health issues. The incident has sparked numerous comments, with many doubting it was a reaction to the drug known as "el químico," noting that his behavior didn’t align with what is typically observed in young people affected by this potent synthetic drug. "With all due respect, but 'el químico' doesn't let you move, don't speak from hearsay," remarked one user.

"Exactly, I've seen several youngsters under the influence of that drug, and it just leaves them dazed. This guy must be mentally ill, some kind of madness, poor thing," another commenter suggested. Others lamented the increasingly bizarre occurrences in Cuba, a society enduring its most severe crisis in decades. "I don't know what's more impressive, him on top of the bus or the bus actually running," one user commented sarcastically.

As of the closing of this report, no additional details about the incident have been confirmed.
