On Monday morning, the body of a security guard was discovered at a bustling market situated opposite the Communist Party headquarters in Santiago de Cuba. The State Agricultural Market "El Santiaguero," located near the Los Ángeles clinic on Garzón Avenue, was cordoned off and heavily guarded by military personnel following the grim discovery, according to journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada on social media.
The deceased, identified as Miguel Pérez Sánchez, was an elderly man whom many online acquaintances described as a "good person." Pérez Sánchez, who did not have children, resided with his wife on Escario Street.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have begun reviewing security footage from around the crime scene, particularly focusing on cameras near the Provincial Party headquarters, in an effort to identify any suspects involved in the murder, the motives of which remain unclear.
So far, no details have been released regarding potential suspects or the exact circumstances surrounding the security guard's death, which has stirred concern among Santiago's residents. Many are questioning how such a crime could occur in such a central and well-monitored area.
Pattern of Violence
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence against security personnel in Santiago de Cuba. In recent months, several guards at both state and private facilities have been injured or killed. In July, a security guard at a city notary office was murdered. A month prior, in June, a guard at a cooperative in San Luis municipality was brutally killed, allegedly by thieves attempting to steal a mule.
Earlier in May, a security worker at a privately-owned business within the Santiago de Cuba Aquarium was seriously injured during a robbery. The recurring attacks have heightened the urgency for improved security measures in the region.
