Cuban Expat from Miami Defends Her Many Suitcases for Upcoming Trip to the Island After Four Years: "I Can't Arrive in Cuba Empty-Handed"

A Cuban woman residing in Miami shared the ordeal she faced when her flight to Cuba was abruptly canceled. The TikTok user @nelita.tiki posted a video recounting her family's experience on the day they were supposed to travel: after arriving at the airport ready to board, they discovered all flights for that day were canceled due to poor weather conditions. However, what caught viewers' attention in the video was the sheer number of suitcases they brought along. One standout comment read, "My goodness, that many suitcases going to Cuba only happens in Miami."

In response to this comment, @nelita.tiki released another video explaining the reason behind their hefty luggage and expressed her disappointment over the flight's cancellation. "You might say it jokingly, but it's true," she remarked. She elaborated that her family had put in significant effort to prepare for the journey, aiming to bring as many supplies as possible to Cuba, considering the island's ongoing hardships. "The backpack on top weighed almost 50 pounds, and the carts were super loaded," she detailed, highlighting her intention to support her loved ones in Cuba—a place she hasn't visited in four years.

The frustration intensified as her mother had confirmed the flight with the airline the day before, yet received no warning about the potential cancellation. "If they cancel the flight before we go through all that work, fine, but they make you go through all that," she lamented. Now, with their new flight rescheduled for Thursday, she hopes there won't be any more setbacks, though she fears a repeat of the situation.

She also clarified that the multitude of suitcases was justified, as she was traveling with her husband and parents, who also carried extra luggage to support family members in Cuba. "I haven't been to Cuba in four years, I can't arrive in Cuba empty-handed, especially given the current situation. I want to take everything I can and more. Many people commented on the number of suitcases. My husband and I are bringing five: three for me and two for him. My mom and dad are also traveling, which is why you see so many suitcases in the video," she admitted, illustrating the reality for many Cubans who, after years away, aim to assist their families by bringing as much as possible from abroad.
