Last Sunday's earthquake in eastern Cuba primarily impacted the province of Granma, resulting in seven injuries and damage to more than 2,000 homes. As reported on Monday by the National Defense Council of Civil Defense, preliminary figures indicate that 2,018 homes in Granma suffered damage, with 26 being completely destroyed. Additionally, 30 healthcare facilities and 40 educational institutions sustained damage.

The local population remains on high alert as the number of aftershocks has reached 1,130, with 47 of them being noticeable, particularly in Pilón, Granma. In Santiago de Cuba, the two tremors affected 234 homes, primarily causing damage to walls, roofs, and ceilings.

Despite the extensive damage, authorities in Granma reported no fatalities directly linked to the earthquakes; however, seven people were injured, including two minors. According to the official weekly newspaper La Demajagua, two individuals in Pilón—a five-year-old girl and a 48-year-old woman—were injured. In Media Luna, several people sustained injuries, including a child and an adult from the community of La Junta.

While the official report states that three deaths occurred, these were not directly associated with the earthquakes. One was a terminal cancer patient, and the other two were due to heart attacks. Disturbing images from various southern coastal municipalities like Pilón, Campechuela, Media Luna, and Niquero depict a scene of destruction and fear gripping the streets.

In Pilón, there were reports of house collapses, cracked walls, fallen ceiling tiles at the Comandante Félix Lugones hospital, and damage to the pier. The mountainous regions experienced nine landslides. As of 5:59 am on Monday, 885 aftershocks had been recorded, including two significant tremors of magnitudes 6.0 and 6.7 felt early Sunday morning.
