Cubans Take to Boyeros Avenue in Protest Over Week-Long Power and Water Outages

Tuesday, November 12, 2024 by Elizabeth Alvarado

On Tuesday morning, numerous residents from areas within the Boyeros municipality, who have been enduring a week without electricity and water, blocked traffic on Rancho Boyeros Avenue and the 100th Street bridge. Their demonstration was a response to the extended disruption of these essential services.

Images shared by the independent outlet Cubanet depicted how traffic was partially halted on this major thoroughfare, as protesters placed branches on the road to draw government attention to their dire situation. "The regime swiftly deployed a significant police presence to disperse the protest. Shortly after, officials arrived to persuade the residents to 'patiently' await the restoration of power and water," reported journalist Mario J. Pentón, accompanying his post on X with footage of the demonstration.

The video footage reveals a small group of demonstrators standing their ground against uniformed officers, while some drivers express frustration over the disruption. The individual recording the scene noted that there were calls to support those actively protesting.

Efforts to Restore Services

Simultaneously, Cubadebate reported ongoing efforts to repair the most severely impacted areas, which include Boyeros, Arroyo Naranjo, Playa, and La Lisa, due to complex technical issues. The Electric Company of Havana reiterated that operations are underway around the clock to address outages in Lutgardita, Villenas, El Chico, Mulgoba, and Santiago de Las Vegas in Boyeros; La Güinera, Managua, and Frank País in Arroyo Naranjo; Buena Vista, Miramar, and Querejeta in Playa; and Punta Brava, El Morado, Arroyo Arenas, and San Agustín in La Lisa.

The Electric Company of Havana, alongside crews from other provinces assisting in restoring the capital's electrical system, continues its efforts to fully resume service. The company provides updates through its official social media channels on Facebook, X, and Telegram, as well as at command centers across all Havana municipalities.

The state-run Electric Company announced that service has been restored to 846,654 customers in the capital, representing 98.36 percent of the total affected.
