On Monday, a Cuban activist emphasized that despite Hurricane Rafael hitting Cuba's western region, alongside widespread power outages and seismic activity in the east, Guantánamo province remains in a state of emergency due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Oscar days ago.

Johanna Jolá Álvarez, leader of the solidarity initiative "Huellas," highlighted on Facebook their commitment to return to the area to continue assisting those affected. "Early this morning, preparations are underway at the Huellas headquarters for the next trip to San Antonio del Sur, Imías, Baracoa, and Maisí," Jolá emphasized.

In this context, the activist expressed gratitude for international support, specifically mentioning "our German friends who continue to bridge distances by bringing medical supplies in their luggage to care for our sick."

She also extended her appreciation to the residents of Casino Deportivo, who remain a crucial part of Huellas' efforts despite their own challenges. "Thanks to Mario Hui for his energy, vitality, and constant dedication to community welfare, developing communication efforts that benefit everyone," she stressed.

The activist acknowledged Mayi and the neighbors of Centro Habana who persist as driving forces, leaving a lasting impact with each step, with a special mention to Luis Miguel Ulacia.

"To the wonderful people of Marianao, who, despite having no water, gas, electricity, or phone service, offer so much love and dedication, and to all Habaneros whose donations provide comfort to those in need."

Aftermath of Hurricane Oscar

The aftermath of Hurricane Oscar, which struck near Baracoa in October with winds of 130 km/h, is still evident across several municipalities in Guantánamo province. Among those affected is a family left completely destitute after the cyclone destroyed their home and possessions.

The victims, residing in Yacabo Abajo in the municipality of Imías, include a young mother, her two children, and her husband, who are currently sleeping on the floors of neighbors' homes.

Recently, filmmaker Daniel Ross Dieguez issued an urgent call for assistance to support multiple families left homeless by Hurricane Oscar's devastating impact. This natural disaster severely damaged the community, leaving homes in ruins and residents in dire conditions.
