Flor de Cuba Sparks Controversy with Walmart Visit in Miami: "Is She Seriously Comparing It to a Cuban Supermarket?"

Wednesday, November 13, 2024 by Sophia Martinez

Flor de Cuba has returned to Miami, and much like her previous trip, the young influencer is busy creating content for her social media platforms. With a substantial following eagerly awaiting each of her vlogs, she recently posted a video on TikTok and Instagram that has stirred the pot among many Cubans. In the video, she visited Walmart and posed a question that rubbed some the wrong way: “Is a supermarket in the United States better than one in Cuba?”

In her vlog, Flor documented her day in Miami, mentioning her stop at Walmart following a session of post-operative massages, highlighting the improvements in her recovery. “The swelling has gone down significantly, and I feel like I wasn’t even operated on just three days ago,” she remarked. The influencer also captured a moment where her partner, Alex, was using Walmart's self-checkout machines, admitting that this payment system still feels quite unfamiliar to her.

Public Backlash Over Supermarket Comparison

However, Flor's initial comment comparing supermarkets sparked a wave of criticism from users on the platform. Responses ranged from disbelief to accusations of insensitivity, with remarks like: “She must be playing games, because I doubt anyone from Cuba can do that,” “Is the question even serious?” “You love stirring the pot,” “Comparing Cuban supermarkets to American ones? Is that even possible?” and “This woman is so opportunistic, sometimes I think she mocks those who can't come here.”

Flor was quick to address some of these criticisms, responding with comments such as: “Is it my fault? Do I set the salaries?” or with a hint of sarcasm: “Yes, yes, all the police go to Miami and live like kings… sure.”

The Delicate Balance of Public Figures

This controversy highlights the precarious balance public figures must maintain when discussing issues impacting Cubans' daily lives. Citizens face shortages of basic goods and economic hardships that starkly contrast with experiences in countries like the United States. Flor de Cuba’s remarks have opened a dialogue on these disparities, emphasizing the challenges influencers encounter when engaging with sensitive topics.
