Cuban lawyer Manuel Viera, known on social media as "Manuel Viera Porelcambio," has taken to Facebook to expose the appalling condition of rental cars available to tourists in Cuba. Viera recounted how a friend of his traveled to a city in eastern Cuba and was forced to pay over $100 per day for a vehicle that was in dismal shape, showing signs of wear and hasty repairs.

"I had to take pictures," Viera wrote in his post. He shared these images online to highlight the state of the vehicles the government rents out at exorbitant prices. "A friend visiting his mother was given this beat-up Chinese car in Bayamo for $105 a day. They claim there were no other options. It looks like a professional boxer after the 12th round!" Viera exclaimed.

Widespread Frustration Over Rental Conditions

Viera pointed out the "details like the scratches on the bumper and the green wires holding the front grille together." His post sparked a wave of comments from other Cubans, who also voiced their frustration over the deteriorating condition of rental cars on the island.

The issue raised by Viera reflects a widespread problem in Cuba, where rental cars, instead of being modernized or retired, continue to operate in precarious conditions. "That car isn't retired; it's still for rent. Just visit the Santiago de Cuba airport to see the sorry state of these vehicles," Viera noted, highlighting the lack of maintenance and alternatives.

Government's Mismanagement of Tourism Vehicles

In recent years, the Cuban government has acquired new cars for the tourism sector. However, those in poor condition are rarely taken out of service; instead, they are sold at high prices to the public or allocated to specific groups like athletes or doctors. This practice not only endangers users but also tarnishes the country's image as a tourist destination.

The mechanical and aesthetic issues of these cars, which have sometimes been involved in accidents, are a concern for both Cubans and visitors. Despite the car rental policy operating in Convertible Currency (MLC), which should have improved conditions, the reality is quite different. The island's rental system remains plagued with serious shortcomings despite the high cost of service.

Urgent Need for Overhaul

Manuel Viera's complaint underscores a problem affecting both tourists and Cubans, who often have no choice but to rent vehicles in deplorable conditions when visiting the island. The situation calls for an urgent review to ensure vehicles meet the minimum safety and quality standards required for this service.
