The ongoing healthcare crisis in Cuba continues to prompt outcries from professionals who face unbearable conditions in their daily work environment. A doctor from the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital in Bayamo has shared his testimony with a news outlet, shedding light on the severe situation at this healthcare center, which mirrors the widespread deterioration of the sector across the island.

The doctor, who chose to remain anonymous, painted a bleak picture characterized by a lack of essential resources, poor working conditions, and a constant fear of retribution.

Inside Report: A Cuban Doctor Speaks Out

"I extend my greetings and respect," begins the doctor's testimony. "I write from Cuba, hoping to bring attention to what is happening at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital in Bayamo. I am a doctor, a profession I deeply love, yet it's no secret that our healthcare system is severely under-resourced. However, the current situation is unprecedented in its severity."

In the department where this doctor works, they desperately need basic medical supplies like gloves, gauze, and dressings for treating diabetic patients with weakened immune systems who require stringent hygiene measures. Yet, due to the inefficiency of leadership, they continue to operate without adequate materials. Supplies arrive unsterilized, without even sterile paper wrapping, posing significant risks to patients.

The shortage extends to gloves, forcing medical staff to reuse them, a practice that once led to surgeries being performed with recycled gloves. This not only endangers patients, who might develop sepsis, but also exposes surgeons to dangerous infections from contaminated gloves.

The situation is exacerbated by the threat of dismissal for those who speak out. The hospital currently operates with less than 40% of its required medical personnel, as many choose to emigrate rather than endure such conditions.

"The situation worsens daily. I hope this message prompts the hospital administration to take urgent action. Thank you in advance," the doctor concludes.

Cuban Voices on Social Media: Frustration and Courage

The doctor's account is far from isolated. Social media platforms have become outlets for other Cubans to express their dismay over the crumbling healthcare system and show support for those brave enough to speak out.

"Sadly, this is the state of all hospitals and public health areas. The government boasts of being a medical powerhouse while everything falls apart. Doctors are performing miracles with the scant resources they have," commented one user.

Another reader wrote, "My respects, doctor. Your words are both courageous and true. Every sector is suffering right now, not just healthcare. We pray for divine mercy to lead us out of this crisis. Doctor, stay strong, though you have every reason to feel discouraged."

A particularly moving response highlighted the doctor's bravery: "This professional is incredibly brave for speaking up about the conditions he must work under. But this is the state of our entire country, torn apart by poverty."

Other comments echoed the widespread nature of the problem: "Most hospitals across the country are in these conditions. It's commendable that this doctor has made the complaint, experiencing firsthand the dire state of Cuba's healthcare system. This is our daily reality."

Cubans Demand Government Action

The testimony and reactions make it clear that the crisis at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Hospital is not an isolated issue. Resource scarcity, personnel shortages, and structural decay are systemic problems plaguing Cuba's healthcare system.

Despite these challenges, many doctors continue to serve with dedication and compassion, even as the pressure and deficiencies push them to their limits. Public denunciations become acts of bravery and cries for help, urging for immediate solutions.
