Authorities in Fort Lauderdale have issued a warning to both locals and visitors about a scam involving counterfeit QR codes being placed on parking meters and "Pay By Phone" signs. These stickers seem genuine, featuring logos from well-known apps, but they actually lead users to fraudulent websites designed to steal financial information after parking.
The fraudulent codes came to light during routine city inspections, as reported by local officials. In response, the police are advising people to make payments only through official parking meters or authorized apps indicated on city signage.
Stay Safe with These Tips
Ensure you only scan QR codes printed on official city signs, avoiding any stickers. Most parking areas use the "Pay By Phone" app, while electric charging stations and the Arts and Sciences District garage operate with "ParkMobile".
Avoid using QR codes for GooglePay, as they are not supported by Fort Lauderdale.
If you encounter a suspicious QR code, report it by calling 954-828-8000, visiting the city's website, or using the FixItFTL app. Should you fall victim to such a scam, contact your local police department immediately.
