As Cuba grapples with an escalating food crisis, a viral video shared by influencer @alain_paparazzi_cubano on Friday reveals the dire situation faced by Cuban mothers. These women are seen collecting food from a garbage dump in a desperate attempt to feed their children.
The footage shows mothers retrieving ground meat and hot dogs from piles of waste while discussing the severe challenges they encounter in providing meals for their families. "I do this for my children," one mother explains as she gathers the meat, noting that it doesn't appear to be soy-based due to the presence of animal fat.
In the video, another woman describes their method of boiling the meat three times before consuming it, in an effort to remove any impurities from the dump. "We boil it three times, and then it's ready to eat," she is heard saying.
The Struggle for Basic Necessities
The scarcity of essential goods and skyrocketing food prices have made daily life in Cuba increasingly unsustainable. This economic turmoil, exacerbated by internal policy failures and resource shortages, has forced many Cubans into extreme measures just to survive.
"This is the future the Revolution promised," remarked some users online, while others expressed sorrow that access to basic food items has become a luxury for many in Cuba.
Scenes of Desperation
In the midst of this crisis, Cuban women and the elderly have become the main figures in these heartbreaking scenes. Recently, another video surfaced showing elderly individuals in Santiago de Cuba collecting spilled powdered milk from the street. Bent over, they gathered the milk with their hands, placing it into plastic bags, as captured in a short video shared on Facebook by reporter Yosmany Mayeta.
