With an impressive 35-year career in diplomacy, Hammer arrives in Havana following his pivotal role as Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, according to an official statement from the embassy.
The U.S. Embassy emphasized that Hammer's arrival underscores America's commitment to promoting human rights in Cuba and enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in crucial areas like security and the welfare of the Cuban people. The diplomatic mission extended a warm welcome to Hammer and his family, highlighting his extensive experience and dedication to international cooperation. Throughout his career, Hammer has held prominent positions, including U.S. Ambassador to Chile and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Washington, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, National Security Council spokesman, and Director of Andean Affairs at the State Department. His extensive experience also includes a role at the National Defense University, where he was Acting Vice President and Deputy Commandant of the Eisenhower School.
Experienced Leader with Deep Roots in Latin America
The new Head of Mission, who grew up in Latin America and has lived in countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil, possesses a deep understanding of the region. Hammer is fluent in Spanish, and proficient in French and Icelandic, the statement noted.
Mike Hammer is married to Margret Bjorgulfsdottir, and they have three children.
On October 30, diplomat Benjamin G. Ziff concluded his mission in Havana as the chargé d'affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Cuba. In a heartfelt farewell video, he shared his experiences on the Caribbean island: “In Cuba, I have had unforgettable moments. I leave the island with a tremendous impression of how beautiful Cuba is, and how beautiful its people are.”
