A Cuban Perspective Goes Viral: Opportunities in Mexico Compared to Cuba

Monday, November 18, 2024 by Joseph Morales

Content creator Michel Crónicas, renowned for sharing his experiences as a Cuban living in Mexico, has once again made waves on TikTok with a candid and thought-provoking message: “I am a Cuban in Mexico, and I will speak the truth.” In his video, Michel contrasts the opportunities available to him in Mexico with the challenges faced by his fellow Cubans on the island.

Highlighting his experiences, Michel stated, “I can buy different kinds of bread,” “I have public transportation options,” “I can stay in a hotel,” and “I can walk on a sidewalk freely.” Through these statements, he underscored the disparities between his life in Mexico and the limitations in Cuba. Michel emphasized that “a Cuban in Mexico has and can, while a Cuban in Cuba does not have and cannot,” concluding with a call for gratitude: “Cubans, appreciate and value your life in Mexico.”

The Response from Mexicans and Cubans

The video, which received over 68,000 likes and nearly 3,000 comments, sparked a strong response. Many Mexicans expressed pride in their country, with comments like: “The Cuban speaks more beautifully about Mexico than Mexicans themselves, thank you”; “I’m Mexican and didn’t know I was rich, thank you for showing respect to my country”; and “You are also Mexican here, my friend.” Others reflected on taken-for-granted freedoms: “Many Mexicans don’t appreciate the independence and freedom in this beautiful country,” and “Be grateful for what we have and protect it.”

Voices of Gratitude and Criticism

Meanwhile, several Cubans residing in Mexico resonated with Michel's sentiments and shared their gratitude: “I am a Cuban in Mexico, and I love this country; I truly value my life here,” and “I've lived here for 26 years and love this country and its kind people.” However, criticisms also surfaced. Some noted that life in Mexico comes with its challenges: “But also tell them that you work hard and honestly, because some come expecting the government to support them,” or “Enjoy it while you can, because Mexico is heading to become like Cuba.”

A Call for Reflection

Michel’s message not only sparked a debate between Cubans and Mexicans but also resonated deeply with many. While some celebrate the freedoms and opportunities in Mexico, others worry about the lack of appreciation for what they already have. Michel Crónicas continues to serve as a cultural bridge and a voice encouraging reflection, not just for those who have emigrated but also for those living in their homeland who sometimes overlook the value of freedom and opportunity.
