The election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States has sparked uncertainty among migrants awaiting entry into the country through scheduled appointments via the CBP One application. Many of these individuals are currently in Mexico, concerned that Trump's return to office might lead to stricter immigration policies, complicating legal entry into the U.S.
In a recent interview with journalist Mario J. Pentón, attorney Jesús Novo from Gallardo Law Firm stressed the importance of remaining calm and adhering to legal processes. Novo warned that attempting to cross the border illegally out of fear of potential policy changes is a mistake that could have serious repercussions. Those who enter illegally face not only deportation but also a ban on any legal residency options or attempts to re-enter the United States for at least five years.
He urged migrants to trust the established process and wait for their appointments through CBP One, as their slots might be scheduled before January. If not, the new administration's decisions on the matter will need to be observed.
CBP One's Role in U.S. Immigration Management
In 2024, the CBP One app has been pivotal in managing U.S. immigration processes. In August, it was announced that the app expanded its reach to southern Mexican regions like Chiapas and Tabasco, allowing migrants, including many Cubans, to schedule asylum appointments closer to their locations.
Furthermore, in September, it was reported that Mexico's National Institute of Migration (INM) established an "emerging safe mobility corridor" to facilitate the movement of migrants with confirmed CBP One appointments to U.S. border points.
It is crucial for migrants to stay informed and follow the legal pathways available for entering the United States, avoiding hasty actions that could jeopardize their future.
