Traffic Chaos in Havana's Bustling Intersection Due to Powerless Traffic Light

Tuesday, November 19, 2024 by Claire Jimenez

Ongoing power outages in Havana have led to traffic lights being out of service, creating hazardous conditions on the roads and increasing the risk of accidents. A recently received video highlights the turmoil at the intersection of Monte and Belascoaín in Centro Habana, near the bustling Cuatro Caminos Market. This area, like many others in the capital, becomes a chaotic hub of vehicles daily.

The footage reveals a lawless scene, where drivers navigate based on the "every man for himself" rule, with no clear right of way. The images evoke comparisons to countries like India, Vietnam, or Egypt, where traffic disorder is a common occurrence.

Recurring Power Issues in Key Areas

Just a few weeks ago, another video sent to CiberCuba showed traffic lights without power at major intersections such as Vía Blanca and Calzada de 10 de Octubre (Agua Dulce); Cristina and Matadero (Cuatro Caminos); Concha and Cristina, and 23 and J. These areas are known for their heavy traffic, exacerbating the problem.

The ongoing infrastructure challenges in Cuba, largely attributed to the socialist communist regime, continue to disrupt daily life and pose serious risks to the safety and well-being of the population.
