Several motorcyclists met with accidents this Tuesday due to an oil spill at the busy roundabout of the Obelisco de Marianao in Havana. A concerned user took to the Facebook group “Traffic Accidents in Cuba” to warn others about the slippery conditions in this heavily trafficked area.
She indicated that over a dozen motorcycles had skidded and fallen within less than an hour, posing a significant hazard for riders in this part of the capital. "To all motorcyclists, be cautious around the Obelisco. It seems someone spilled oil, and bikes are falling frequently. Already more than 12 bikes have gone down in under an hour," cautioned Christian Ramírez.
Heightened Risk at Marianao's Bustling Intersection
In response to this warning, a young man agreed that caution was necessary when navigating the area. He noted that the most treacherous section is the curve on 31st Avenue leading towards the Maternidad Obrera hospital.
As the end-of-year period approaches, another individual urged everyone to be extra careful since road accidents typically increase during this time. The call for vigilance comes shortly after another oil spill at the junction of Calzada de Vento and San Miguel, also in Havana, which caused several motorcycle falls and car collisions. Witnesses reported that a tow truck spilled a substantial amount of oil, leading to numerous accidents.
Recurring Problems Raise Safety Concerns
A similar incident occurred in Santiago de Cuba last April. During a power outage that left the Patria Avenue without street lighting, a vegetable oil spill caused several motorcyclists to slip in the darkness. Such recurring incidents highlight the critical need for improved safety measures on Cuba's roads.
