Cuban TikToker Criticizes Fellow Cubans in the U.S. for Downplaying Island's Crisis

Wednesday, November 20, 2024 by Joseph Morales

Cuban actress and influencer Eileen Morales, widely known as La Cubana de TikTok, delivered a candid and unfiltered message to those who downplay the harsh realities of life in Cuba. This was in response to feedback she received regarding her criticism of the island's situation. "How is it that I make a video discussing my country's reality, and so many Cubans tell me 'it's not that bad'? Why are you here then?" Eileen questioned, making her stance clear.

With a determined tone, the influencer recounted the hardships she faced in Cuba: "I went through hunger, poverty, no refrigerator, with a small child," highlighting the severe conditions where "to eat beef, you had to do something illegal." Eileen expressed disappointment at those who try to deny the severity of Cuba's situation. "Some say 'I never struggled,' but that's because they either had well-connected families or were involved in illegal activities."

Reflections on Basic Rights and Opportunities

Her message also included criticism of the lack of basic rights in her homeland: "In Cuba, even fishing is illegal, and if you kill a cow, you get imprisoned worse than a rapist." Eileen not only defended herself against criticism but also reflected on her personal growth in the United States: "Here, I've become a person; I've been able to start my businesses and support my family. I'm happy to live in a country where you can earn an honest living."

The video sparked a wave of reactions on TikTok. Many supported her views and shared similar experiences. One user commented, "That's exactly how it is, in Cuba you had to steal to survive." Another noted, "I ate meat in Cuba, but we never knew what it was, praying they wouldn't catch the person who stole it."

Mixed Reactions and Acknowledgment of Courage

However, there were also criticisms, with one user saying, "Every country has its problems; there's no need to compare." Others, however, praised Eileen's courage: "It needed to be said, and you said it. Thank you for using your platform to speak about the Cuban reality."

La Cubana de TikTok's message not only addressed those who try to minimize the island's hardships but also offered a reflection on the importance of acknowledging opportunities and the daily struggle of emigrating.
