The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) announced this Wednesday that over 3,600 aftershocks have been recorded following the twin earthquakes on Sunday, November 10, southeast of Pilón in Granma. According to the latest report, since those seismic events of 6.0 and 6.7 magnitudes occurred, a total of 4,941 aftershocks have been detected, with 118 being noted as noticeable or likely noticeable.

The Pilón-Chivirico area remains the hardest hit, with 382 events ranging from magnitudes of 2.1 to 3.5. A significant tremor of magnitude 4.2 was felt across several municipalities in Granma and Santiago de Cuba on Tuesday at 6:11 am.

Seismic Activities Intensify

Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the national seismological service at CENAIS, specified that the earthquake was pinpointed at coordinates 19.75 north latitude and 77.23 west longitude, approximately 20.51 km southwest of Pilón, at a depth of around 10 km. The expert had previously cautioned that the once dormant Oriente fault is now 'awakening,' which was expected to be normal around the areas near Santiago de Cuba.

The 4.2 magnitude quake on Tuesday exacerbated the damage to already vulnerable structures in Pilón, a community severely impacted by the 6.7 magnitude tremor on November 10.
