Cuban-American Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart has offered insights into the strategies he believes Donald Trump will implement regarding the regimes in Cuba and Venezuela during a potential second term in office. In a recent interview with journalist Mario J. Pentón from Martí Noticias, Díaz-Balart predicted a "dramatic change" for Díaz-Canel and Maduro, suggesting they should already be on edge. The congressman emphasized that these strategies will focus on tightening U.S. policies towards both dictatorships and strictly enforcing immigration laws.
Strict Approach to Cuba: “No More Playing with People's Pain”
Díaz-Balart emphasized that a Trump administration would initiate a substantial shift in its dealings with Cuba, making it clear that the Cuban regime will no longer be allowed to use resources to "harm the United States and oppress its own people." “A dramatic change is coming. The regime’s use of all available means to damage the U.S. and suppress its citizens will not be tolerated,” the congressman asserted.
He also criticized the current administration under Joe Biden for granting visas to individuals associated with the Cuban regime, calling it a breach of U.S. laws. “These people should start packing their bags because they won't be able to retain visas obtained illegally,” he warned. Additionally, he stressed that Trump would not permit international allies to support Havana or allow any threats to national security from the island.
Intensifying Pressure on Venezuela: “Trump Set a Clear Stance”
Addressing Venezuela, Díaz-Balart stated that Trump would enhance sanctions against Nicolás Maduro’s regime and bolster support for the opposition. “Trump was the first global leader to recognize the Venezuelan opposition, establishing a clear stance against the dictatorship,” Díaz-Balart highlighted.
He harshly criticized the Biden administration for delaying recognition of the Venezuelan opposition’s electoral victory, underscoring that a future Republican government would adopt a stricter policy in favor of democratic values. Díaz-Balart added that harsher measures would be imposed on countries or entities supporting the Venezuelan or Cuban regimes, aiming to curb their operational abilities in the region.
Migrant Policy Overhaul: Deporting Criminals and Repressors
A key point highlighted by the congressman was the future Trump administration's focus on immigration. According to Díaz-Balart, deportation would be prioritized for individuals with criminal records and those linked to oppressive regimes.
He specifically mentioned prosecutors and judges who sentenced peaceful protesters from the July 11, 2021, demonstrations in Cuba and are now residing in the United States. “These people are here because President Biden ignored the law. Under Trump, laws will be strictly enforced. It’s clear: they cannot be granted visas or allowed entry to the United States,” he affirmed.
He further criticized the Humanitarian Parole Program, which he claims allowed individuals connected to the Cuban regime to enter the U.S. in violation of immigration rules.
A Warning to America’s Adversaries: “If You’re Nervous, You Should Be”
Díaz-Balart delivered a strong message to those he views as adversaries of the United States. “If you’re nervous, you should be. This administration will enforce the law and prevent further immigration violations,” he declared.
The congressman emphasized that Trump’s approach aims not only to bolster national security but also to ensure rigorous compliance with U.S. laws. According to Díaz-Balart, this hardline stance signifies a commitment to democratic values and the defense of human rights in nations under authoritarian regimes.
