A Cuban woman living in Houston, Texas, has sparked a wave of reactions on TikTok after sharing a video with the phrase: "When you get a call from Cuba and the second thing they say is (things are bad, there's nothing...) and you've only been in the United States for four months." The post quickly attracted thousands of comments, both supportive and critical, highlighting the expectations placed on immigrants and the stark reality for those still in Cuba.
In response to the influx of messages, the young Cuban, known as @dorita2612 on TikTok, decided to address some of the feedback. She particularly focused on a comment stating: "Even if I don't have enough for myself, I would never dedicate this song to my family. It seems we forget what it was like when we were in Cuba and our opinions about those abroad." Her response was straightforward: "I didn't make this for my family; thankfully, most of them are here, and those who remain in Cuba don't ask me for anything. I send them things without them asking. Also, don't take things on social media personally if it doesn't have your name on it. So, folks, what you post might relate to a relative or a stranger who inspired your video. Don't take things personally to avoid issues."
She emphasized that her goal in creating the video was to stir reactions and spark discussions about a topic that resonates deeply with emigrants. "I wanted people to comment and watch my videos, and I achieved that, thanks to all the feedback, both positive and negative."
The Role of Social Media in Sparking Conversations
Reflecting on the purpose of social media, she encouraged her followers not to take the content too seriously: "Many people ended up laughing because that's what social media is for, to entertain; if you want to get upset, there's always work for that."
