Ana Margarita Martínez, a Cuban-American and the former wife of Cuban spy Juan Pablo Roque, has criticized actress Ana de Armas for her romantic involvement with the stepson of Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel. Ana Margarita, who was portrayed by de Armas in the 2019 Netflix film Wasp Network, which depicts Cuban spies infiltrating anti-Castro groups in South Florida, expressed her deep disgust upon learning about the actress's new relationship with Manuel Anido Cuesta.
"While it's not surprising, it deeply repulses me," Ana Margarita commented. "Her romance with Díaz-Canel's stepson only confirms what I already knew: Ana de Armas aligns herself with them. Her relationship highlights her complicity with the regime that has oppressed and silenced countless Cubans for decades," she stated in a Facebook post.
Ana Margarita, born in Miami in 1960, noted that the film's producers never consulted her and misused her name without permission, twisting her story for propagandistic purposes, which reopened old wounds. She identifies herself as a "proud member of the Cuban exile community" and accused the film of distorting reality by portraying exiles as criminals while glorifying Cuban spies as patriots.
A Call for Truth and Integrity
"Ana de Armas never cared about the truth. The suffering of her fellow Cubans, many still imprisoned on the island, meant little to her. Now we know why," she concluded. In 2020, following the release of Wasp Network, Ana Margarita remarked that Ana de Armas should have shown more shame and integrity as a Cuban, respecting the truth in her artistic portrayal.
"I would tell her she should have had more shame as a Cuban and desired to represent the truth rather than participate in an infamy against the Cuban-American community," she asserted at the time.
