Since the powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.7 struck on November 10th, the eastern region of Cuba has been experiencing constant tremors. The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) reported that by November 22nd, 5,350 aftershocks had been recorded. Out of these, at least 125 were noticeable to residents.

Aftershock Distribution and Impact

The latest seismological update indicates that 172 tremors were detected between November 21st and 22nd. These were distributed across several areas: Pilón-Chivirico experienced 160 tremors with magnitudes ranging from 1.1 to 4.0; Santiago-Baconao had 11 tremors, with magnitudes between 0.8 and 2.1; and Moa-Purial recorded a single tremor with a magnitude of 2.3. The most notable event during this period occurred in the Dominican Republic, with a 4.1 magnitude quake.

Public Concern and Government Response

Despite the frequency and intensity of these aftershocks, most have been minor and have not caused significant damage. However, fear remains prevalent among residents in areas such as Pilón, Media Luna, and Santiago de Cuba, who have been voicing their concerns on social media platforms.

On Tuesday, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake was felt across several municipalities in the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba, while another 4.0 magnitude event on November 21st shook the region, with its epicenter located 19 kilometers southeast of Pilón.

Expert Analysis and Safety Measures

Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service, described this ongoing seismic activity as "normal," explaining that it could persist for weeks or even months following significant seismic events. "Aftershocks result from the adjustment of the rupture zone and are typically smaller than the main event," he noted.

Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols in the event of seismic activity. This includes identifying safe areas and avoiding weakened structures.
