The prison authorities in Santiago de Cuba have confirmed that José Daniel Ferrer García, a prominent opposition leader and political prisoner, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Boniato prison's hospital. His family has been permitted a "remote" visit. This development follows multiple reports alleging that Ferrer was hospitalized after being assaulted at Mar Verde prison, sparking concern from his family and international organizations, as reported by Radio Martí.
Since Thursday, Ferrer García's family has been attempting to gather direct information regarding his health condition. Ana Belkis Ferrer, his sister who resides in the United States, told Martí Noticias that Ferrer is expected to be returned to Mar Verde prison. This Friday, his wife, Dr. Nelva Ismaray Ortega, along with two of their children, plan to visit him, although they have been informed that they will only be able to see him from a distance.
Ana Belkis has criticized the prison authorities for restricting close contact with Ferrer, describing the situation as alarming given the recent events. The allegations of physical abuse against Ferrer have incited outrage among human rights organizations and international officials. Brian Nichols, the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, expressed his concern on X, urging the Cuban government to grant Ferrer's family immediate access to him and to release him along with other political prisoners.
Meanwhile, the Cuban Council for Democratic Transition (CTDC), where Ferrer served as president until his arrest on July 11, 2021, issued a statement condemning the assault. Ferrer García, who founded the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), was detained on July 11, 2021, as he attempted to join the widespread anti-government protests across the island, which were driven by demands for electricity and basic freedoms.
