A horrific event unfolded in the municipality of San Luis, Santiago de Cuba, where an entire family was tragically murdered in their home, which was then allegedly set on fire to disguise the crime as an accidental blaze. The incident was reported on Friday morning, and at least three individuals lost their lives: a young man and his parents, as stated by local reporter Yosmany Mayeta on his Facebook channel.
The authorities have yet to confirm the exact motives behind this heinous crime, but various accounts suggest a robbery may have been involved, notably the theft of several oxen and other animals belonging to the farming family. The young man who died alongside his parents in this brutal attack was identified as Felipe Peña Santos, aged 30. The family resided in Chamarreta, a small rural community within the municipality.
Persistent Threats in Rural Areas
Residents of the area have voiced concerns over the frequent attacks occurring there. "In that place, they're doing as they please, and nobody cares about what happens to those left behind," shared the daughter of a local resident, who has been a victim of theft several times but fortunately was never home during the incidents.
A friend of the family added, "Before killing them, they took everything they had, including the animals. It was a family with some wealth, but sadly, they lived in the middle of nowhere. The village, called Chamarreta, is quite remote and scarcely populated, with fewer than 100 inhabitants."
Voices Demanding Justice
"They were dear friends of mine, killed and burned inside their home—husband, wife, and son," lamented another acquaintance of the victims. "Felipe Peñas Sablón, known as Felipón, Gisela Santos, his wife, and Felipe Peñas Santos, known as Felipito. Nothing was left of their home... even the animals were caught in the flames... I demand justice for this family and hope the law holds the murderers accountable," expressed the grieving friend.
