The renowned Cuban musical director and pianist, Lazarito Valdés, who leads the iconic band Bamboleo, has announced his decision to settle in the United States with his family. In an interview on the YouTube show La Casa de Maka, Valdés candidly discussed the reasons for his move to Miami, citing the economic and social challenges plaguing the artistic community in Cuba.
"The situation in Cuba has become untenable, especially for musicians. We face a constant struggle that hampers our professional and personal growth," stated Valdés, who is also a composer.
Challenges Facing Cuban Musicians
During the interview, the Bamboleo director reflected on the severe impact of the crisis on the island's music industry. He pointed out that while artists strive to keep their creativity alive and engage with their audience, economic constraints and limited opportunities make their work increasingly difficult. "It's a very challenging time for Cuban musicians, both at home and abroad," Valdés conveyed.
Reactions and Support
The news of his decision has sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with fans expressing their support and acknowledging Lazarito Valdés's contributions to Cuban music. Some have voiced regret over his departure but understand the motivations behind his choice.
Founded in 1995 under Valdés's guidance, Bamboleo has remained one of the most influential groups in Cuban popular dance music, achieving success across borders and captivating multiple generations. In 2020, Valdés emphasized the alignment of Cuban youth and music with the revolution and participated in the recording of the song ‘No te metas,’ which the pro-government website Cubadebate described as Cuban artists' response to "constant provocations from the United States."
