A Cuban father has come forward with a heart-wrenching account, alleging that his son's recent death in a hospital in Mayabeque province was due to medical negligence and lack of proper care. Lázaro Pérez Díaz recounted that on November 21, his 35-year-old son, identified as Lázaro Pérez Báez, arrived at Leopoldito Martínez Hospital in San José de Las Lajas at 8:30 a.m. with what appeared to be appendicitis pain.
The grieving father shared that his son was left sitting in a hospital bed for hours, writhing in agony, despite the urgency of his condition. "They didn't take him to surgery, didn't send him to Havana urgently, didn't perform any ultrasound, and he suffered until he died," Pérez Báez stated, repeatedly calling the incident a crime.
"He died suffering, crying out for help, and I was desperate, shouting for them to attend to him, that his 'guts' were going to burst, and yet no one rushed," he added. He specifically accused a surgeon named "Andri," who allegedly hid within the hospital despite being informed of the severity of his son's condition.
A Call for Justice Amidst Tragedy
Lázaro Pérez claimed his son had visited the doctor several days in a row, each time being told it was merely indigestion, and no ultrasound was ever performed. "It was a crime, a 35-year-old 'child,' a fighter, full of life, full of health [...] They killed him in this hospital. My blood pressure has risen several times, but I will continue to fight for justice," he emphasized.
According to Pérez Díaz, his son also suffered from a "perforated hernia," further complicating his condition, and questioned why his son wasn't sent to the capital sooner. "They said they lacked resources, but why didn't they send him to Havana in time? When he lost his pulse, they started rushing, but it was too late. Upon arrival in Havana, the anesthesiologist told us he was too critical, that it was too late," he lamented.
Seeking Accountability and Answers
The distraught father labeled the doctors who denied his son the necessary care as "murderers" and expressed his willingness to confront them. He highlighted that those allegedly responsible are now scrambling to concoct excuses to "save themselves." "But they killed him. They killed him because they didn't attend to him. No one from the medical team on duty on November 21 cared for my son," concluded Lázaro Pérez, who has called for widespread dissemination of his denunciation.
The video accompanying his statement includes distressing images of his son sitting in a hospital bed awaiting proper medical care. As of this article's publication, no additional details have been confirmed regarding the allegation, which adds to a growing number of medical negligence cases in Cuba, many tragically resulting in death.
