Currency Trends in Cuba's Informal Market: A Closer Look at Recent Stability

Tuesday, November 26, 2024 by Charlotte Gomez

On Tuesday, November 26, the exchange rates for the U.S. dollar, euro, and MLC in Cuba's informal market remain unchanged on average. This stability has persisted for several days now. However, it's noteworthy that in the median values for buying and selling over the past 24 hours, as reported by the independent outlet elToque, the dollar has seen a two-peso increase in both selling price (330) and buying price (327). This could indicate a potential upcoming rise in the selling value of the U.S. currency, although it's too soon to tell if this will materialize.

For the other two currencies, the median values show no change. As of the time this article was written, the dollar is still valued at 328 pesos, a rate established on November 12. The euro has been consistently priced at 345 since November 4. Meanwhile, the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) remains at 265 CUP, a figure that has shown only slight fluctuations over recent months.

Current Exchange Rates as of November 26, 2024 - 12:36 PM in Cuba

According to elToque, the exchange rate for the U.S. dollar to CUP is 328, for the euro to CUP is 345, and for the MLC to CUP is 265.

The latest report from the Observatory of Currencies and Finances of Cuba (OMFi) highlighted that the worsening economic crisis in Cuba has had a "paralyzing effect" on the informal currency exchange market. "The intensification of the economic crisis in 2024 has had a paralyzing effect on the informal currency market. The reduced number of tourists, imports, and the general downturn in economic activity across all sectors have led to a contraction in the supply and demand for foreign currencies," stated Cuban economist Pavel Vida.

The recent stability in the pricing of dollars, euros, and MLC—characterized by minor increases or decreases in value—stands in stark contrast to the significant fluctuations witnessed during the first seven months of 2024, which saw sharp spikes and drops in prices.
