Havana's Floating Boardwalk: A Decade of Neglect and Decay

Saturday, November 30, 2024 by Bella Nunez

The once-celebrated Floating Boardwalk of Havana, unveiled in November 2015 as part of the city's 495th-anniversary celebrations, now lies in a state of severe disrepair. With broken planks, graffiti, and impassable areas, it poses significant hazards to visitors. A recent video released by CiberCuba highlights the advanced deterioration of this landmark, located near the Alameda de Paula in Havana Bay.

The footage unveils incomplete ramps, vandalism, and a lack of maintenance since its opening. Originally intended as a recreational and tourist attraction, the boardwalk's issues began surfacing just a year post-inauguration. By 2016, significant damages were already evident, as documented in photos and reports.

In 2019, architect Orlando Inclán, one of the boardwalk's creators, admitted to Tribuna de La Habana that there were quality issues with some of the materials used in its construction, particularly the initial batch of planks. "Many of the original planks had to be replaced because they didn't meet the required standards," explained Inclán, who also pointed out the lack of a proper maintenance plan for the structure.

Inclán emphasized that, despite the wear and tear, the damage could be reversed with timely maintenance, especially concerning the stainless steel railings affected by corrosion. However, the routine inspections carried out every three or four years on other heritage sites have not been applied to the Floating Boardwalk, leaving it vulnerable to the ravages of time and use.

Constructed from compressed wood and resin, the boardwalk was reminiscent of the T-shaped pier that stood in its place over two centuries ago. Its floating design even allowed for relocation to other maritime points, but neglect has buried the potential of this once-innovative leisure spot in Cuba's capital.
