A tragic collision occurred on Wednesday night in Havana, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist when a car and a motorcycle collided on the Calzada de San Miguel, near the Virgen del Camino. The unfortunate event was shared on the Facebook group 'Traffic Accidents in Cuba' by a user who posted a video depicting the aftermath of the crash.
According to various accounts on social media, the collision involved a Peugeot car and a motorcycle, whose driver suffered fatal injuries. As of now, the reasons behind the accident and the identity of the deceased motorcyclist remain unknown. Neither the authorities from San Miguel del Padrón nor the state's media have reported on this grim incident.
Conflicting Accounts and Lack of Official Reports
Numerous users offered conflicting explanations in the comments. Some claimed the motorcyclist skidded, leading to the Peugeot hitting him because it couldn't stop in time, while others suggested a truck was responsible for the fatal crash. "A major accident occurred near the Virgen del Camino. The young man was killed, crushed by a truck," one user wrote. Another commented, "The young man skidded, and the car behind him hit him." A different account mentioned, "I passed by, and there was no truck, just a motorcycle, the deceased, and a small yellow car."
Recent Fatal Accidents Involving Motorcyclists
In January, Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Traffic Department of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), highlighted that 59% of fatalities in traffic accidents involve cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians. Recently, a motorcyclist named Robelis Adames, aged 45, died after a crash on Aguilera Street in Santiago de Cuba, following four days of suffering. Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported that Adames collided with the perimeter wall of the Cultural Plaza on the mentioned street.
At the end of October, another tragic traffic accident took the life of a motorcyclist in Santa Cruz del Norte, Mayabeque province, when a bus collided with a motorcycle. The victim was identified as "Yunieski," described by an online user as "a great guy from an excellent family." Images shared on the Traffic Accidents in Cuba Facebook group depicted the motorcycle almost crushed beneath the front wheels of the bus.
Earlier in September, a motorcyclist died in an accident on the Vía Blanca, near Guanabo in the Havana del Este municipality. The motorcyclist's passenger, a 25-year-old woman, was hospitalized, according to social media reports. It appears the young pair were returning from "end of summer" activities in Varadero.
