Esther, the mother of Yoandy Palomino, whose poignant battle against cancer amidst Cuba's shortages touched countless hearts, passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged fight with the disease. On social media, Palomino shared the heartbreaking news with a moving message: "Fly high, my beautiful queen."
Until her last breath, Yoandy exhibited profound dedication to his mother, who faced not only cancer but additional health complications. Just a day prior to Esther's passing, the young man had made a heartfelt plea on Facebook for help in obtaining a cylinder of oxygen.
In recent years, Yoandy emerged as a beacon of strength and solidarity by sharing his mother's cancer journey on social media. Esther was diagnosed with breast cancer, and through their story, the harsh realities faced by cancer patients in Cuba were laid bare. The lack of essential medications to treat and ease the suffering of terminally ill patients was starkly highlighted in their narrative.
The Struggle for Basic Healthcare in Cuba
Their story brought to light the immense challenges Cuban families face in accessing essential medicines and basic resources like oxygen and treatments, within a healthcare system plagued by deficiencies and government neglect.
Last October, Yoandy shaved his head as a tribute to his mother and all cancer patients. "Not all heroes wear capes. Some are warriors who fight every day for their lives with courage, hope, and bravery," he wrote on Facebook at the time.
A Legacy of Courage and Inspiration
Described by Yoandy as a "true warrior," Esther defied medical odds several times, overcoming critical moments. Throughout this period, her son devoted himself not only to her care but also to inspiring others through messages of faith and perseverance.
