A Cuban man has been taken into custody following the discovery of a marijuana plantation on his farm, which is part of the state-run Agroforestry Business Unit (UEB) in Holguín. This information was reported by the pro-government Facebook page, Cazador-Cazado.

The operation was conducted in the Las Minas neighborhood, located in the Báguanos municipality, where the arrested individual was identified as Luis Manuel González. The official source indicated that during a search, authorities uncovered several marijuana plants that were cleverly disguised and meticulously maintained.

In addition to the illegal crop, agents from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) seized a homemade firearm. No further details about the case have been disclosed as of the time of this report.

Back in July of this year, Cuban police apprehended another individual in Holguín, suspected of being involved in marijuana trafficking. In that instance, the arrest occurred near the Frank País International Airport as the suspect was traveling on a motorcycle with the drugs hidden between his legs.

Earlier, in September 2023, another youth was detained in the city of Holguín, specifically in the Pueblo Nuevo neighborhood, while in possession of a plastic container with plant material, a nylon-wrapped package, and a 'marijuana joint,' as detailed by Cazador-Cazado at the time.

A month before that, in August, authorities nabbed a Cuban in Holguín for selling marijuana and hashish. This individual lived in the La Quinta neighborhood within the city. Over recent years, Cuba has seen a troubling rise in drug use and trafficking—a phenomenon once limited by the island's strict surveillance but now posing a significant challenge.

While synthetic drugs, often referred to as "químico," have shown the most substantial increase in consumption and trafficking, marijuana has also gained popularity, particularly among young people who consider it a low-risk substance.
