In an attempt to address the escalating trade tensions between the two nations, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened at Mar-a-Lago, Florida. Despite Trudeau describing the meeting as an "excellent conversation," he was unable to secure a commitment from Trump to withdraw his threat of a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods, as reported by the Associated Press.

During their three-hour dinner discussion, the leaders covered significant topics including trade relations, the fentanyl crisis, energy policies, defense strategies, Arctic affairs, and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. Trump, posting on his Truth Social network, labeled the meeting "productive" and stressed the importance of tackling the "devastation" caused by the drug epidemic. He urged Canada to help stem the flow of fentanyl from China.

Trudeau emphasized that his main concern is safeguarding Canadian workers and businesses from measures that could harm both Canada and U.S. consumers. He reminded that during Trump's first term, Canada and the United States successfully renegotiated the North American trade agreement (USMCA), describing it as a "win-win" deal.

However, the potential tariffs pose a threat to the stability of the trade relationship, which involves a daily exchange of goods and services worth 3,600 million Canadian dollars. Canada is the top export market for 36 U.S. states and supplies 60% of the crude oil and 85% of the electricity imported by the United States.

In a statement, Trudeau's office reiterated the importance of U.S.-Canada cooperation: "As Canada's closest friend and ally, the United States is our key partner, and we are committed to working together in the interests of Canadians and Americans." Analysts warn that increased tariffs could lead to retaliatory measures, similar to those in 2018 when Canada imposed tariffs in response to U.S. duties on steel and aluminum.

Meanwhile, Trump's tariff threat continues to create uncertainty at a critical time for Canada's economy, which relies on trade with the U.S. for 77% of its exports.

Earlier, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had another conversation with Trump, discussing migration, social programs, and North American trade relations. During a press conference at the National Palace last Thursday, Sheinbaum assured that "there will be no potential trade war."
