An accident on Cuba's Central Highway involving a semi-truck and a classic car resulted in significant damage to the vintage vehicle. Fortunately, there were no fatalities reported, though some individuals sustained injuries. A friend of the truck drivers, who wished to remain anonymous, shared in the Facebook Group "Accidents Buses & Trucks" that the collision occurred on Sunday around 3:45 p.m. as vehicles were exiting the city of Holguín, "right in front of the city's ataxia patient center."
"Metal can be repaired, life cannot," he commented, encouraging his colleagues without providing further details on the possible causes of the crash.
Pedro Domínguez, a moderator of the Facebook group, offered additional insights into the incident. "I was just informed it was a '57 or '58 Ford, one of those operating on the route from Parque del Quijote to the Cruce del Coco. It was heading towards the city and collided head-on with a semi-truck near the Ataxia Clinic. The classic car veered off the road and nearly plunged into the Matamoros River," he explained.
Photos confirm that the classic car, known locally as an "almendrón," was severely damaged. As of the publication of this article, the exact number of injured individuals and their medical status remain unclear.
Frequent Traffic Accidents Plague Cuban Roads
Traffic accidents continue to be a serious issue on Cuban roads. In another recent incident, a cargo truck caught fire early in the morning on the National Highway near Cienfuegos. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in that case, although there was significant property damage.
Without recent updates on the current situation, Cuban authorities previously stated that by the start of July, the country had experienced 543 fewer accidents in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period the previous year. During the official television program "Mesa Redonda," Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Traffic Department of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), also noted a decrease of 81 fatalities (23%) and 151 injuries (5%) from January to June this year, compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
