Biden Dozes Off During Meeting with African Leaders

Wednesday, December 4, 2024 by Oscar Fernandez

President Joe Biden of the United States found himself nodding off this Wednesday during a gathering of African leaders held in Angola. While attending the assembly with prominent figures from Africa, Biden was observed closing his eyes multiple times as his counterparts delivered their remarks and took notes.

A video that has rapidly gained traction online captures the U.S. leader with his head resting on his left hand in at least two different positions, his eyes shut. Biden traveled to Angola to participate in the Trans-African Lobito Corridor Summit, which aimed to update the plan for expanding the railway corridor that spans the African continent, a strategic move to counter China's growing influence in the area.

This journey marks his final visit to Africa as President, as well as one of his last international trips before stepping down from the White House on January 20. Back in July, following a lackluster performance in a televised debate against Donald Trump, The New York Times disclosed that Biden had informed Democratic governors of his need for more rest, stating he would avoid scheduling events past 8:00 pm. Shortly after, Biden opted out of the race for a second term as the country's leader.

In November 2021, the Democratic leader was caught by drowsiness during the opening of the Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, where cameras caught him struggling to stay awake. During one of the speeches, with arms crossed and maintaining an upright posture, Biden rested for nearly 30 seconds after several noticeable blinks.

The incident did not go unnoticed by one of his aides, who quickly came to his aid and approached him with the evident purpose of rousing him. After a brief exchange, Biden nodded and rubbed his eyes, clearly attempting to wake himself. Shortly thereafter, he exited his seat.
