Sunday, December 8, 2024 by Felix Ortiz

A vehicle from the Cuban Telecommunications Company, ETECSA, erupted in flames on Saturday in Havana, yet fortunately, no injuries were reported among its passengers or pedestrians in the bustling area of the capital.

The fire's origin remains unknown, but it occurred near the well-known Cuatro Caminos Market, specifically at the intersection of Monte and Matadero Streets. This incident was highlighted by the Facebook page 'La Tijera', which uploaded a video showing a substantial smoke plume resulting from the blaze.

"An ETECSA car caught fire in Havana just moments ago. The state-owned telecommunications company’s vehicle went up in flames this afternoon at Monte and Matadero Streets in Cuatro Caminos, close to the Market. Thankfully, there were only material damages," stated the post.

The vehicle, bearing the license plate B162800 and likely a Fiat Panda from the 1980s or 90s, was spared from complete destruction due to the quick action of a bystander who used a fire extinguisher to control the flames.

As of writing this article, no statements have been issued by the official press, authorities, or the state-owned company allegedly involved in the hazardous incident.

In recent months, vehicle fires in Cuba have emerged as a recurring concern. At the start of December, a gas-powered motorcycle caught fire on a busy avenue in Santiago de Cuba, causing alarm among residents and drivers. Theories suggest electrical faults and fuel issues as potential causes.

A few weeks earlier, a car was engulfed in flames at an intersection in El Vedado, Havana. This was attributed to a possible short circuit or a ruptured fuel hose, though no injuries were reported.

In a tragic incident in July, a car overturned and caught fire near the Cotorro bridge, resulting in the death of a young girl and severe injuries to other passengers.

Additionally, in May, a state-operated SEPSA vehicle was consumed by flames in the Siboney neighborhood of Havana. The car was completely destroyed, sparking speculation about fuel conditions and the maintenance of the state-owned vehicle fleet.
