A Cuban residing in Spain recently returned to his homeland after nearly three years, only to be taken aback by the stark reality he encountered. Known as Tian on his YouTube channel, he arrived just as the entire country was plunged into darkness due to widespread power outages.
Living in Matanzas, Tian had to spend several days in Havana for personal matters. There, he witnessed the sadness and frustration of the populace amid the massive blackout. However, what struck him the most was the overwhelming presence of garbage on the streets, even in tourist hotspots. The sight of scattered trash and torn bags caught him off guard until he realized it was due to people scavenging for food scraps or anything of value in the waste.
"Witnessing that was a powerful blow, leaving me speechless. It was a reality I had never encountered before, at least not in such a raw and visible manner. (...) It's a reality that many try to ignore and justify, yet it exists on the streets, visible to everyone, reflecting the dire need experienced in Cuba," he emphasized.
In Matanzas, Tian observed the deterioration of streets, long queues, and the bitterness of residents, which starkly contrasted with ideological billboards that no longer resonate with most people. During his visit, he learned of certain developments, such as families acquiring power generators and the proliferation of private businesses and stores, which are better stocked than state-run ones but charge exorbitant prices unaffordable for average Cubans.
He also experienced firsthand the poor service of ETECSA and noted the worsening inflation, as well as crises in transportation, healthcare, and safety.
