Rayner Álvarez Borges, a Cuban diver, tragically lost his life on Saturday while engaging in spearfishing off the coast of Arona, located in Tenerife, Canary Islands. This heartbreaking news was confirmed by close friends and acquaintances.
The unexpected death of Álvarez, aged 42, has left a profound impact. Originally from Cabaiguán in Sancti Spíritus, he was the father of a young boy. Álvarez was not only an experienced diver but also a passionate motorcyclist, cherished by his friends and colleagues. This is evident from the outpouring of condolences on social media.
Canary Islands media reported on the same day about the tragic accident that claimed Álvarez's life on the southern tip of Tenerife Island. Although initial reports did not disclose Álvarez’s identity, CiberCuba later confirmed that he was indeed the victim of the fatal incident.
According to the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 112, the incident occurred around 12:32 PM. An alert was received regarding a diver who had been rescued from the sea in critical condition, requiring urgent medical attention.
The diver was transported ashore by an inflatable boat, where personnel from the Canary Emergency Services (SUC) found him in cardiac arrest. They administered both basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as reported by Europa Press. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Álvarez could not be revived, and his death was confirmed.
Álvarez's friends have taken to social media to express their grief and to honor his legacy as both a person and a spearfisherman. Orlando Torres wrote, “With great sorrow, we bid farewell to the joyful young man, lover of fishing and motorcycles, our compatriot and friend Rainer Álvarez Borges. To his family and friends, especially his mother Raysa Borges, my deepest condolences. Rest in peace. Eternal glory.”
Yordanys Reyes Ledesma shared a heartfelt farewell, “With profound pain in my heart, we say goodbye to my brother Rayner Álvarez Borges, a staunch advocate of spearfishing and creator of the registered brand Aseresub Team. May the Great Blue protect you and fill you with light, my brother!”
This year has seen the deaths of several other Cubans involved in spearfishing within Cuba.
