A heartbreaking incident took place in Santiago de Cuba on Tuesday, claiming the life of a 14-year-old boy struck by a car in the Songo-La Maya municipality. Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada shared on Facebook that the young victim was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a car that fled the scene without offering any help. However, it seems the driver later surrendered at a police station.

The teenager, named Maikel, lived on La Isabelita street with his parents and a baby brother. He attended the Luis Alfonso Silva Tablada secondary school. A follower of the reporter mentioned, based on hearsay, that the vehicle was speeding while the boy was properly riding in his lane. "Another car was approaching from the opposite direction, and to avoid a collision, the driver of the green vehicle hit the boy on the bicycle. Shockingly, the driver did not stop and left him lying in the street as if he were nothing," the witness recounted.

A doctor who happened to be at the scene tried to assist Maikel but knew his injuries were too severe, predicting he wouldn't survive the journey to the hospital. The boy was taken to the North Children's Hospital (La Ondi) alive but sadly passed away there.

Earlier in September, another tragic accident occurred in Santiago de Cuba involving a five-year-old boy. He was traveling with his father on a motorcycle when they crashed near a bridge outside the city in an area known as El Palmar, specifically at kilometer 11 and a half on the El Castillito road. The driver was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time. The young boy died shortly after reaching Hospital La Ondi, while his father was admitted to a different medical facility.
