Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, a distinguished scientist and head of Cuba's National Seismological Service, announced that since the earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.0 and 6.7 struck southeast of Pilón in Granma province on November 10, a total of 8,051 aftershocks have been cataloged. Through a Facebook post, the expert from the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) noted that at least 133 of these aftershocks may have been felt in areas close to the epicenter. However, he clarified that specific reports confirming their perceptibility are lacking.

Arango emphasized that such activity is normal following significant magnitude earthquakes like those in November. "The larger the earthquake's magnitude, the longer aftershocks will occur," he explained. The original quakes, measuring 6.0 and 6.7, caused considerable concern among residents, as they were strongly felt and triggered alarm in several communities near Pilón.

Last Friday, a tremor of magnitude 4.1 was recorded at 09:04:33 UTC, centered 42 kilometers southeast of Pilón in Granma province. Arango Arias reported that this seismic event, occurring at a depth of 8 kilometers, was noticeable in various areas within the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba. CENAIS stated that there were no reports of material or personal damage from this tremor.

Previously, on December 9, the network of stations logged a 3.4 magnitude earthquake, which was detectable in the provinces of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba. Arango specified that the tremor took place at exactly 7:29 a.m. and was noticeable in "several localities" of the mentioned provinces. The reported location was at coordinates 19.89 north latitude and 75.50 west longitude, approximately 24 kilometers south of Caimanera in Guantánamo, with a depth of 30 kilometers.

The seconds that shook Pilón in Granma province on November 10 have left an indelible mark on its residents, including Yaniseli Ramírez Tejeda, a 25-year-old mother. "It was a large rumble," Ramírez recalled to the state-run newspaper La Demajagua, as she described how the ground began to tremble while she was cooking in the yard with her two-year-old child.
