Traffic Adjustments Announced for San Lázaro Celebrations in Havana

The transportation authorities in Havana have announced measures to enhance traffic flow during the traditional San Lázaro celebrations scheduled for December 16 and 17. This religious event, recognized as one of the most significant and well-attended in Cuba, draws thousands of devotees to the National Sanctuary of San Lázaro in El Rincón, located in Boyeros municipality, southwest of the Cuban capital.

In an effort to ensure smooth mobility for attendees and minimize disruptions to public transport services, Havana's Provincial Transportation Company has implemented a special plan that will be in effect from Saturday, December 14, until the early hours of Wednesday, December 18.

Traffic Management Measures

Detours and Route Adjustments: Modifications will be made to affected routes to maintain vehicle flow towards El Rincón Sanctuary and facilitate the arrival of pilgrims.

Driver Safety Precautions: Motorists are advised to exercise heightened safety measures and heed the instructions of transport inspectors, officers from the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), and traffic agents.

Additionally, both pilgrims and drivers are urged to adhere to the directions given by designated personnel and to exercise caution to prevent accidents during this massive gathering.

A Deep-Rooted Devotion

The devotion to San Lázaro is deeply ingrained in the island's culture, second only to the veneration of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre. Each year on December 17, thousands flock to the sanctuary to fulfill promises, seek health, or express gratitude for granted favors, in a display of faith that transcends generations and borders.

Established in 1917, the El Rincón Sanctuary becomes the focal point of these celebrations, welcoming pilgrims who often engage in physical sacrifices, such as walking barefoot or on their knees, as a sign of devotion and promise fulfillment.
