Fundraising Effort for Cuban Girl Lía Reaches $16,000, But More Needed to Hit Target

Thursday, December 19, 2024 by Elizabeth Alvarado

The fundraising campaign to save the life of five-year-old Lía Isabel García Torres, who is bravely battling leukemia, has raised close to $16,000. However, despite this progress, the total needed to cover her medical treatment and stay in the United States is still unmet.

Thanks to the generous support of countless individuals, a total of $15,980 has been collected since a GoFundMe account was established for this cause. Nevertheless, the goal of $30,000 remains distant.

Living in the province of Mayabeque, Lía was diagnosed last year with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She has been undergoing treatment at the Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital in Havana, where she faced adverse reactions to the medication and spent time in intensive care.

Challenges and Hope for Treatment in the U.S.

Although Lía was able to return to the oncohematology ward, her treatment faced interruptions due to complications. This past October, activist Yamilka Laffita (also known as Lara Crofs) shared a post on social media seeking financial help to enable Lía's treatment in Florida, USA.

The Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami has accepted Lía's case, but her family must bear the costs of her stay and treatment, as they have no relatives in the United States, only friends who can offer support. Therefore, they are actively fundraising to meet these expenses.

Community Support and Call to Action

Laffita, along with fellow activist Diasniurka Salcedo, has been promoting the campaign across social media, aiming to assist the family in accessing treatment at the renowned Florida medical institution.

"Let's keep praying, sharing; remember, this princess wants to live, and together we can make it happen because WHERE THERE'S A WILL, THERE'S A WAY!!! Help by donating and sharing, thank you!! DON'T LET THIS SMILE FADE AWAY, PLEASE!!" Salcedo urged on Facebook this Monday, encouraging continued support for the little girl.

Lía's mother, Yailé Torres, recently expressed her gratitude to those who have helped, shared the campaign, and donated to make the family's trip and stay in the U.S. possible. She also asked for continued sharing of the GoFundMe link to encourage more donations.

Lía herself wanted to share her appreciation, sending a heartfelt message: "Thank you very much, I love you all with my heart!"
