Currency Market Fluctuations in Cuba: Euro and MLC Prices Drop

Wednesday, December 18, 2024 by Sofia Valdez

This Wednesday morning, a decline in the average selling prices of the euro and the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) in Cuba has been reported. According to the daily update from the independent outlet elToque, which tracks the ups and downs of foreign exchange rates on the island, the drop comes unexpectedly. Despite Tuesday's median values showing no signs of such a change, on December 18, the euro is now valued at 332 CUP, three pesos less than the previous day.

Meanwhile, the MLC has seen an even steeper decrease, falling from 270 to 265, marking a five-peso drop from its prevailing value over recent weeks. At this time, only the US dollar remains stable, priced at 325 pesos, a value it reached on December 14. The question remains: how long will it stay unchanged?

Amidst these fluctuations, residents on the island are bracing for a bleak end of the year. The cost of basic food items has soared, and the much-coveted pork, a staple of Cuban holiday meals, is beyond the financial reach of most. Current exchange rates as of December 18, 2024, at 8:55 a.m. in Cuba are as follows:

  • USD to CUP according to elToque: 325 CUP
