Renowned Cuban actor Juan Carlos Roque Moreno described his return to Cuba, after a temporary stay in Spain, as a move filled with courage and determination. "Going back (to Cuba) was a brave decision. I wasn’t going to remain in a place that was affecting me both physically and psychologically," Roque revealed in an interview with the news outlet OnCuba.

During his time in Spain, where he emigrated in 2023, Roque faced significant personal and professional challenges. The work projects he anticipated did not materialize, complicating his adaptation as he sought to explore new opportunities. As a Spanish citizen, this was his first venture outside Cuba, despite having had several previous chances. "I never really wanted to travel until that moment. However, the plans that seemed to be going smoothly fell apart," he admitted.

While in Europe, the actor encountered health issues that affected his vision, prompting him to reassess his priorities. "Ultimately, the happiest place is with family," emphasized Roque, who found in his return to Cuba a chance to recover and continue his professional development.

Challenges for Cuban Actors Abroad

Roque also reflected on the obstacles faced by Cuban actors seeking opportunities overseas. He noted that many of his colleagues in Spain work outside their profession to make ends meet while striving to keep their passion for the arts alive. "Actors who get the chance to travel abroad shouldn’t expect to practice their craft outside the island unless they’ve been hired beforehand. The immigrant reality is quite different," he stated, highlighting the sacrifices involved in these journeys.

Roque's decision to return to Cuba was driven by a mixture of bravery and pragmatism, fueled by his commitment to family and a deep-seated passion for the arts. Currently, he remains active in television and theater projects in Cuba, reinforcing his dedication to the cultural development of the island.

A Career Highlighted by Versatility

With a distinguished career in film, Roque has appeared in movies like Suite Habana (2003), Conducta (2014), and Kangamba (2008), all pivotal works in his career. Born on April 4, 1965, in Havana, he has also made a lasting impact on Cuban theater and television.

Among his most memorable television roles are performances in productions such as Bajo el mismo sol (2011) and El rostro de los días (2020), showcasing his talent and artistic versatility across various formats.

In 2022, Roque expressed living "in a sad, fractured country abandoned by over a million of its children," referring to the crisis gripping the nation, particularly during a wave of repression following widespread protests triggered by extensive blackouts.
