Army General Raúl Castro Ruz made a rare public appearance to bestow the honorary title of Hero of the Cuban Republic upon Mijaín López, a five-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling. The ceremony, attended by key figures of the Havana regime, including President Miguel Díaz-Canel, also recognized Gladys Bejerano Portela and Omara Durand as Heroines of Labor, according to the state-run site Cubadebate.

The honor awarded to López not only acknowledges his exceptional sports career but also his deep commitment to revolutionary values and the Cuban people. Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa emphasized that López's achievements place him among the greatest athletes of all time. Beyond his impressive victories at the Olympics, Valdés Mesa highlighted the athlete's loyalty to the legacy of Fidel and Raúl Castro, as well as to the Revolution that shaped him.

"One only needs to review his remarkable achievements to recognize Mijaín as one of the greatest athletes of all time," Valdés Mesa expressed, evoking the countless triumphs that have made López a symbol of perseverance and greatness for Cuba and the world. Often hailed as the best Greco-Roman wrestler in history, Mijaín has consistently supported the communist government, even going so far as to strike a young compatriot during the Pan American Games in Chile 2023, a case that was dismissed by the courts.

Mijaín López's Unmatched Olympic Records

Mijaín López has etched his name in the annals of modern Olympic history by becoming the first athlete in any discipline to secure five consecutive titles in the same individual event. This feat occurred in the 130-kilogram division of Greco-Roman wrestling, where he reigned supreme in Paris 2024, having previously dominated in Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016, and Tokyo 2020.

No wrestler had ever claimed five titles in the history of the Games, and López also became the oldest wrestler to win a medal at 41 years and 11 months, surpassing the previous record held by Adolf Lindfors (41 and a half years), who won gold in Antwerp 1920. The "Giant of Herradura" (5-0-0) solidified his status as his country’s most decorated champion, matching fencer Ramón Fonst (4-1-0/Paris 1900, St. Louis 1904) in terms of total medals.

Two decades after his debut in Athens 2004, where he left without a podium finish, Mijaín López concluded his unparalleled Olympic career. The emotional farewell reached unimaginable levels as he knelt, placed his wrestling shoes at the center of the mat, and shed tears amidst a whirlwind of emotions. In the decisive match, he showcased the demeanor of an invincible man, a tough competitor, but his indomitable spirit softened after his victory over compatriot Yasmani Acosta (6-0), representing Chile and also a source of pride for the island.

Acknowledging Dedication and Excellence

In the same event, Gladys Bejerano, who led the General Comptroller's Office for 15 years, and Omara Durand, an undisputed star of the international Paralympic movement, were praised for their contributions to the nation. Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento, Secretary General of the Cuban Workers' Central, highlighted Bejerano's discipline, rigor, and loyalty, describing Omara as a symbol of commitment and sacrifice for the country.
