Actress Yerlín Pérez: A Force to Be Reckoned With in Her Quest for Freedom and Expression

Already a well-known figure when she arrived in Miami, Yerlín Pérez had made her mark in theater and film. It was television, however, that catapulted her to fame through roles such as the unforgettable “Arturita,” a character that captured the essence of a pure country girl. Adapting to Life in Miami

"Here in Miami, I'm ready to take on the world!" Pérez exclaims. She and her family have established a thriving food business while she continues to pursue her passion for acting. Performing live shows reminiscent of her days in Cuba, she remains active on platforms like Pronyr TV, which offer opportunities to collaborate with actors she hasn't worked with in years. In the U.S., the sky is the limit, but it requires immense effort and determination. "You have to keep pushing forward, fighting, and living joyfully because we all deserve happiness," she asserts.

The Decision to Leave Cuba

Pérez had long considered leaving Cuba, but her son's well-being kept her rooted. Despite opportunities to leave during travels for work and cultural exchanges, she refused to abandon him. Eventually, a tourist visa allowed them to plan their escape. On July 11, 2021, amid the turmoil in Cuba, she felt an overwhelming sense of danger, prompting her to act. By November 16, she had left the island, a decision driven by the need to provide a safe future for her son.

Rooted in Remedios

Reflecting on her origins, Pérez fondly recalls growing up in Remedios, a charming village in Villa Clara. Her childhood was filled with joyous memories of riverside adventures and cultural festivities. "My family is everything to me," she says, highlighting the deep connections with friends and relatives that have endured across borders. Her upbringing in such a vibrant community shaped the person she is today, and she cherishes those roots.

Embracing Motherhood

Motherhood is a profound and transformative experience for Pérez. Her son, Eduard, is her confidant and reason for living. "I couldn't leave Cuba without him," she explains. Her journey to the United States was motivated by the need to be by his side, emphasizing that being a mother defines her very existence.

A Passion for Performance

Pérez's journey into acting was almost predestined. From a young age, she was drawn to performance, engaging family members as her audience. Her hometown's rich cultural scene provided a fertile ground for her talents to flourish, leading her to pursue acting professionally. Pérez speaks candidly about the deteriorating conditions in Cuba, a place she left three years ago. "Cuba has become a dead-end street," she laments. The lack of basic necessities, rampant corruption, and absence of fundamental rights make life unbearable. While she yearns for family and friends left behind, the fear of returning looms large. Pérez's heart goes out to the mothers whose children are imprisoned for daring to dream differently. "I have nothing but respect and sorrow for them," she states, hoping for a future where their sacrifices are honored.
