Cuban in the U.S. Criticizes Those Who Travel to the Island to Show Off: "You're Nobody Here, But Feel Like Somebody There"

Friday, December 20, 2024 by Elizabeth Alvarado

When it comes to traveling to Cuba, the contents of a suitcase can reveal a lot: Who packs just the essentials to maximize the weight limit for family gifts? Who focuses on showing off expensive clothes and strolling around? These considerations triggered an impassioned rant from Lachiwow, a Cuban living in the United States, who held nothing back when discussing some people's attitudes upon returning to the island.

"I only pack three shorts, three t-shirts, and three pairs of underwear. Everything else is for my family," Lachiwow stated in his video. His frustration ran deeper, however: "You see people decked out, wearing coats and fancy clothes, strutting around Havana like they're models. And I wonder: Are they going to visit family or to flaunt themselves? Because I don't have room for even my own clothes; it's all for my loved ones."

Lachiwow, known on TikTok as @lachiwow, strongly criticized what he sees as a deviation from the main purpose of these trips: spending time with family. "Many people barely set foot in their own homes. They spend their time buying drinks for everyone or parading around with men and women to appear important. Why not do that here? Because in Cuba, you feel significant; that's where you think you're someone."

The video sparked a flood of comments from people who shared similar experiences, as well as those who disagreed. One user noted, "I do the same; I take three pairs of leggings and three shirts, and the rest is for my family." Another added, "My suitcase looks like a market; I bring beans, peas, and candies. My clothes? I wear my mom's over there." Others highlighted the sacrifices they make to provide more for their families: "I can't even fit a toothbrush; everything is for them"; "I travel with just a couple of rags and wash the same clothes every day"; and "Every time I go, I leave all my clothes there so I don't have to carry them next time."

However, not everyone agreed with Lachiwow's stance. "If you can, do it. If someone wants to explore or enjoy themselves, let them. Everyone travels how they want," commented a follower. Another person remarked, "I bring my stuff and also for my family. There's room for both."

Despite differing opinions, many agreed that family remains the most important aspect. "Tell me what you flaunt, and I'll tell you what you lack," one person wrote, encapsulating the sentiment shared by several followers. Another added, "Those who show off the most often have their families in the worst conditions there. Priorities should be clear."
