Young Woman Shares Her Miami Experience and Sparks Online Debate: "Which Miami Are You Living In?"

Saturday, December 28, 2024 by Madison Pena

A Spanish woman living in Miami recently took to TikTok to share a video reflecting on how her behavior has evolved since moving to the United States. In the post, user @tammy_ibiza highlights several cultural differences between Spain and her life in Miami, which have had a significant impact on her.

One of the differences she notes is her approach to makeup; while she rarely wore makeup in Spain, she finds herself doing so in Miami. She also mentioned how, in Spain, it's common for everyone to interrupt each other in conversations. In contrast, she discovered that in Miami, such interruptions are considered disrespectful. Furthermore, she observed the professional and polite demeanor of people, even if they don't particularly like someone.

Another aspect she pointed out was the tone of voice used in conversations. Spaniards, similar to Italians, are known for speaking loudly, whereas in Miami, people tend to use a more moderate tone and often ask for repetitions if they can't hear clearly.

However, the video elicited mixed reactions on TikTok, especially among the Cuban community and longtime Miami residents. Some comments included, "You must be in a unique part of Miami where it's just you;" "That's not the Miami I've lived in for over 20 years;" "Are you living in Miami or Kentucky???" and "Oh dear, what would we Cubans say?" Others remarked, "We Cubans are quite similar to the Spaniards, I'd say very alike."

Some users expressed strong disagreement with her observations: "I'm Spanish and live in Florida, and I don't know where all that is because I don't share that view, honestly;" "In Miami, at least where there's a Cuban, you'll hear loud voices and be interrupted while speaking;" "Which Miami is she talking about?" or "Are you sure you're Spanish? It sounds like you're describing Cubans, haha."

Some even questioned whether she was accurately describing Miami, noting that the city, renowned for its vibrant Cuban and Latin presence, is known for its energetic atmosphere and loud voices.

The video underscores how cultural perceptions can vary greatly depending on the context and community one is immersed in, illustrating that Miami can offer a different experience for each individual.
