Does money bring happiness? This age-old question has been debated for years. Now, thanks to a study conducted by Purdue University in Indiana, residents in the United States have a clearer picture of how much income is needed to achieve happiness in each state. The study highlights that while earnings can significantly impact emotional well-being and life satisfaction, other critical factors like access to basic needs such as healthcare also play a role.

According to the research, to achieve happiness in Florida, an annual income of slightly over $106,000 is needed. More specifically, the minimum salary required is $106,050, although a sense of well-being can be attained with $60,600. Despite the high unemployment rate during the pandemic, the Sunshine State is currently faring well, with an unemployment rate of 2.8%.

Purdue's findings suggest that the ideal income for life satisfaction in the United States is around $105,000. The study also sheds light on the income required for happiness across different life stages. Based on this figure and by examining each region's cost of living index and unemployment rates, the financial website GOBankingRates ranked states from least to most in terms of the amount needed for happiness.

West Virginia tops the list, where a minimum salary of $89,460 suffices for happiness. The state's unemployment rate stands at 3.8%, and the cost of living index is 14.8% below the national average. Following is Mississippi, requiring $91,035 for happiness and $52,020 annually for emotional well-being.

Oklahoma ranks third, needing a minimum salary of $91,140 for happiness. The cost of living there is 13.2% lower than the national average, with an unemployment rate of 3%. Emotional well-being can be achieved with $52,080.

Purdue's global findings indicate that $95,000 is necessary for a positive "life evaluation," while emotional well-being can be reached with earnings between $60,000 and $75,000. However, GOBankingRates cautions that happiness is subjective; comfortable living costs and expectations of well-being vary from person to person, meaning economic needs will also differ.
