A Colombian Air Force aircraft, dispatched under the directive of President Gustavo Petro, touched down in Havana carrying a ten-ton shipment of humanitarian aid. This consignment comprises non-perishable food, essential medications, medical supplies, and other vital goods aimed at supporting the Cuban populace, which has been severely impacted by a series of natural disasters exacerbating the island's ongoing socio-economic crisis.

President Petro conveyed his support via social media, denouncing the embargo as a "human rights violation." Accompanying this humanitarian mission were Vice Minister Jorge Rojas, Energy Minister Andrés Camacho, and the heads of the Colombia-Cuba Friendship Group in Congress, Senator Gloria Flórez and Representative Gabriel Becerra, both members of the ruling Historical Pact party.

Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed gratitude on social media, highlighting the "support, solidarity, and personal involvement" of the Colombian president. "You are a symbol of Latin American and Caribbean unity," Díaz-Canel remarked upon the arrival of the aid.

In recent months, Cuba has received international assistance to cope with the aftermath of Hurricanes Oscar and Rafael. The United Nations ramped up its efforts, allocating $78.3 million to address the damage wrought by these natural disasters. Similarly, the European Union authorized an additional €2.7 million, bringing their total humanitarian aid to four million euros for 2024. This aid has included crucial supplies like medications, water storage tanks, hygiene kits, and tarps for the most vulnerable populations struck by the hurricanes.

Organizations such as the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) have also contributed by sending shipments of 24 tons of humanitarian supplies, which encompass solar lamps, tools, plastic tarps, kitchen items, and hygiene products to support those affected by the hurricanes.

Since President Gustavo Petro assumed office in August 2022, the relationship between Colombia and Cuba has significantly strengthened. One of Petro's initial actions was to request that the Cuban government rekindle peace talks with the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas, which had been stalled since 2019. By June 2023, Petro and Díaz-Canel presided over the conclusion of the Third Cycle of Peace Talks with the ELN in Havana, where an unprecedented ceasefire was declared, reinforcing Cuba's pivotal role in Colombia's peace process.

Moreover, Petro has frequently voiced his admiration for Fidel Castro and his influence in Latin America, contributing to a deeper ideological bond between the two administrations.
